Low Carbon Crossing

From August 27 to November 12, 2016, Mindy Ahler and Ryan Hall are traveling over 4000 miles by bicycle across the United States and engaging in community conversations on climate solutions along the way. This “Low Carbon Crossing” will begin in Seaside, OR, and end in Washington, D.C.

The goal is to motivate people to take action in a way that inspires them, gather their experiences and concerns about climate change, raise funds for Cool Planet (www.coolplanetmn.org) and Citizens’ Climate Lobby (www.citizensclimatelobby.org), demonstrate bicycling as a fun, low-carbon way to travel and end with lobbying in D.C. to share the experience with legislators.

Through blogging, video interviews and social media, they will share the journey and the voices of communities they visit with all who wish to follow along online and in person.

Mindy Ahler of Edina, MN is Co-Director of Cool Planet, creating neighborhood fun and action for our planet.  She is also a regional coordinator for Citizens’ Climate Lobby, creating the political will for a livable world.  Mindy is an avid bike commuter and long-distance rider. She has ridden over 10,000 miles on her bike and craves opportunities for long rides that combine her passion for climate change education with her passion for pedal power. Mindy’s concern for the climate stems from her social justice background and involvement with people around the world.  This cross-country ride has been about seven years in the planning and Mindy is delighted to be making it a reality.

Ryan Hall just finished his third year in AmeriCorps, a community service organization focused on building communities and leaders in the United States. He had served with City Year Columbus, OH as a tutor and mentor, AmeriCorps NCCC in Denver, CO and the Southwest region as a wildland firefighter, and Green Iowa AmeriCorps in Decorah, IA as a home energy auditor and community organizer for action on climate. He originally hails from Detroit, MI, and hopes to return one day to enact positive change in his hometown.
